-dığında takdirde / -ması durumunda / -ması hâlinde in Turkish

These suffixes mean “condition”. The existence of a verb or a situation depends on the realization of another verb. These suffixes are just like the “-se/-sa” conditional suffix you learned before in B1 level. But you can click here take a look if you have question on this subject too 🙂

⇒Yağmur yağmazsa dışarı çıkacağız.

(We will go out if it doesn’t rain.)

⇒Yağmur yağmadığı takdirde dışarı çıkacağız.

(We will go out if it doesn’t rain.)

 

These three suffixes are the same and you can use them interchangeably: -dığı takdirde, -ması durumunda, -ması halinde

⇒Yağmur yağdığı takdirde eve döneriz.

(If it rains, we will go back home.)

⇒Yağmur yağması durumunda eve döneriz.

(If it rains, we will go back home.)

⇒Yağmur yağması halinde eve döneriz.

(If it rains, we will go back home.)

 

The suffixes change according to vowel harmony ⇓

If the last vowel of the verb is “a” or “ı” the suffix is: “dığı taktirde” (kaldığı takdirde)

If the last vowel of the verb is “e” or “i” the suffix is: “diği taktirde” (geldiği takdirde)

If the last vowel of the verb is “o” or “u” the suffix is: “duğu taktirde” (okuduğu takdirde)

If the last vowel of the verb is “ö” or “ü” the suffix is: “düğü taktirde” (gördüğü takdirde)

If the last vowel of the verb is “a, ı, o, or u” the suffix is: “ması durumunda/halinde” (okuması durumunda)

If the last vowel of the verb is “e, i, ö, or ü” the suffix is: “mesi durumunda/halinde” (gelmesi durumunda)

 

The first letter of -dığı takdirde change according to consonant harmony ⇓

If the last letter of the verb is “f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h or p” the suffix is: “tığı, tiği, tuğu, tüğü taktirde” (koştuğu takdirde)

If the last letter of the verb is NOT “f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h or p” the suffix is: “dığı, diği, duğu, düğü taktirde” (olduğu takdirde)

 

These three suffixes can change according to possesive suffixes.

The change of -dığı takdirde according to possessive suffix ⇓

⇒Ben ödevlerimi yaptığım takdirde arkadaşlarımla buluşabilirim.

(I can meet my friends if I do my homework.)

⇒Sen ödevlerini yaptığın takdirde arkadaşlarınla buluşabilirsin.

(You can meet your friends if you do your homework.)

⇒O ödevlerini yaptığı takdirde arkadaşlarıyla buluşabilir.

(S/he can meet his/her friends if s/he do her/his homework.)

⇒Biz ödevlerimizi yaptığımız takdirde arkadaşlarımızla buluşabiliriz.

(We can meet our friends if we do our homework.)

⇒Siz ödevlerinizi yaptığınız takdirde arkadaşlarınızla buluşabilirsiniz.

(You can meet your friends if you do your homework.)

⇒Onlar ödevlerini yaptığı/yaptıkları takdirde arkadaşlarıyla buluşabilirler.

(They can meet their friends if they do their homework.)

 

The change of -ması durumunda according to possessive suffix ⇓

⇒Ben ödevlerimi yapmam durumunda arkadaşlarımla buluşabilirim.

(I can meet my friends if I do my homework.)

⇒Sen ödevlerini yapman durumunda arkadaşlarınla buluşabilirsin.

(You can meet your friends if you do your homework.)

⇒O ödevlerini yapması durumunda arkadaşlarıyla buluşabilir.

(S/he can meet his/her friends if s/he do her/his homework.)

⇒Biz ödevlerimizi yapmamız durumunda arkadaşlarımızla buluşabiliriz.

(We can meet our friends if we do our homework.)

⇒Siz ödevlerinizi yapmanız durumunda arkadaşlarınızla buluşabilirsiniz.

(You can meet your friends if you do your homework.)

⇒Onlar ödevlerini yapması/yapmaları durumunda arkadaşlarıyla buluşabilirler.
