In this lesson, we will talk about the other function of the suffix se/sa: the conditional tense (şart kipi). What is the conditional tense se/sa? In the şart kipi se/sa (conditional tense); the possibility of a situation depends on another situation. So there are at least two cases.You can compare it to the “if” structure in English.

 

What Is The Differences Between Dilek Kipi se/sa and the Şart Kipi se/sa?

Yes, the suffixes are the same with dilek kipi. You can understand their meaning by looking at the context. Also there are some differences between them. Let’s see what are the differences!

  1. Dilek kipi is used in the following contexts: wish, request, dream, regret, indecision, disregard, etc.
  2. As you can see from its name, şart kipi is used for to mean condition.
  3. Dilek kipi is only used at the end of verbs. To use dilek kipi at the end of nouns, you have to use the verb ol-.
  4. Şart kipi is used at the end of verbs, nouns and adjectives.
  5. Dilek kipi only appears in the -se/-sa forms.
  6. Şart kipi; at the end of words ending with a vowel, it appears in the form -yse/-ysa. Elsewhere it appears as -se/-sa.
  7. Dilek kipi is often used with “KEŞKE” (wish).
  8. Şart kipi is often used with “EĞER” (if).

Diyet programına uyarsa birkaç ay içinde normal kiloya ulaşacak.

  • If s/he follows the diet program, s/he will reach normal weight in a few months.

Annem, işten erken gelirse bizi sinemaya götürecek.

  • My mom will take us to the movies if she gets home from work early.

Bu sefer de doğum günümü unutursanız size çok kızarım.

  • If you forget my birthday this time, I will be very angry with you.

Derslerine yeterince çalışmazsan sınavda başarılı olamazsın.

  • If you don’t study hard enough, you won’t be successful in the exam.

Bu ödevi, bu gece bitirmezsem dersi seneye tekrar almak zorunda kalacağım.

  • If I don’t finish this assignment tonight, I’ll have to take the class again next year.

Ben onu aramazsam o beni hiç aramaz.

  • If I don’t call him/her, s/he never calls me.

Bolca sözcük ezberlersen bu dili daha hızlı öğrenirsin.

  • If you memorize lots of words, you will learn this language faster.
