1. Meaning of suffixes -dur /-dür / -dır / -dir in Turkish!
It has the meaning of “to guess”. Whoever says it means s/he is expressing his/her own opinion. It means that s/he is speaking on his own guess and his/her own opinion.
⇒(Bence) Hava soğuktur, montunu da yanına al.
(I think it’s cold, take your coat with you.)
⇒(Bence) Hava soğuk değildir, montunu evde bırakabilirsin.
(I think it’s not cold, you can leave your coat at home.)
⇒(Bence) Seni özlemiştir, onu aramalısın.
(I think s/he missed you, you should call him/her.)
⇒(Bence) Seni özlememiştir, biraz daha beklemelisin.
(I think s/he didn’t miss you, you should wait a little longer.)
⇒(Bence) Bu elmaların tadı güzeldir, alalım mı?
(I think these apples taste good, shall we get them?)
⇒(Bence) Bu elmaların tadı güzel değildir, almayalım.
(I think these apples don’t taste good, let’s not buy them.)
⇒(Bence) Yürüyerek geliyordur o yüzden geç kalmıştır.
(I think s/he’s coming on foot, that’s why s/he’s late.)
⇒(Bence) Yürüyerek gelmemiştir, otobüse binmiştir. O yüzden bugün erken gelmiştir.
(I think s/he didn’t come on foot, s/he got on the bus. That’s why s/he early today.)
⇒(Bence) Diğer yolda çok trafik vardır, buradan gidelim.
(I think there is a lot of traffic on the other road, let’s get out of here.)
⇒(Bence) Diğer yolda çok trafik yoktur, oradan gidelim.
(I think there is not much traffic on the other road, let’s go from there.)
2. Meaning of suffixes -dur /-dür / -dır / -dir in Turkish!
It is used when talking about certain information, official information or rules. It has an official language.
⇒Sigara içenler için para cezası vardır.
(There are fines for smokers.)
⇒Sigara içenler için para cezası yoktur.
(No fines for smokers.)
⇒Burada sigara içmenin cezası 5000 TL’dir.
(The fine for smoking here is 5000 TL.)
⇒Kampanyamız stoklarla sınırlıdır.
(Our campaign is limited to stocks.)
⇒Mağazamız hizmetinize açılmıştır.
(Our store is open to your service.)
⇒Mağazamız henüz hizmetinize açılmamıştır. Çok yakında sizlerle olacağız.
(Our store has not been opened to your service yet. We will be with you very soon.)
⇒Hafta sonu sokağa çıkma yasağı uygulanacaktır.
(The curfew will be applied on the weekend.)
⇒Hafta sonu sokağa çıkma yasağı uygulanmayacaktır.
(The curfew will not be enforced on the weekend.)
IMPORTANT RULES!
1. 1. This suffix can be in 8 different forms according to vowel and consonant harmony: -dır, -dir, -dur, -dür, -tır, -tir, -tur, -tür.
2. As you can see in the examples above, you can use this structure in both noun and verb sentences.
3. When using with verbs: -Dir suffix comes after the tense and personal suffix.
- Gitmişimdir (May/I think i’m gone)
- Gitmişsindir (May/I think you are gone)
- Gitmiştir (May/I think s/he is gone)
- Gitmişizdir (May/I think we are gone)
- Gitmişsinizdir (May/I think you are gone)
- Gitmişlerdir (May/I think they are gone)
4. When using with verbs: It is used with past tense (past tense with miş), present continuous tense (-yor) and future tense (-EcEk).
- Gelecektir. (I think/i guess s/he will come.)
- Geliyordur. (I think/i guess s/he is coming.)
- Gelmiştir. (I think/i guess s/he came)
