-mak yerine, -maktansa, -(y)acağına, -(y)acağı yerde

These suffixes are like “instead of, rather than” in English. You can see that they are used in two situations in Turkish.

 

1. It has the meaning of choosing one of the two verbs and not choosing the other.

⇒Hafta sonu dışarı çıkmak yerine evde oturacağım, daha iyi.

(I’d rather stay at home than go out on the weekend.)

⇒Hafta sonu dışarı çıkmaktansa evde oturacağım, daha iyi.

(I’d rather stay at home than go out on the weekend.)

⇒Hafta sonu dışarı çıkacağıma evde oturacağım, daha iyi.

(I’d rather stay at home than go out on the weekend.)

 

 

2. It means not to do a verb that needs to be done, but to prefer another verb instead.

⇒Ders çalışmak yerine bilgisayar oyunu oynuyorsun.

(Instead of studying, you are playing computer games.)

⇒Ders çalışmaktansa bilgisayar oyunu oynuyorsun.

(Instead of studying, you are playing computer games.)

⇒Ders çalışacağına bilgisayar oyunu oynuyorsun.

(Instead of studying, you are playing computer games.)

⇒Ders çalışacağın yerde bilgisayar oyunu oynuyorsun.

(Instead of studying, you are playing computer games.)

 

 

-acağına and -acağı yerde These both suffixes change according to possesive suffixes ⇓

⇒Ben ödevlerimi yapacağıma / yapacağım yerde arkadaşlarla dışarıda buluşuyorum.

(I meet my friends outside instead of doing my homework.)

⇒Sen ödevlerini yapacağına / yapacağın yerde arkadaşlarınla buluşuyorsun.

(You meet with your friends instead of doing your homework.)

⇒O ödevlerini yapacağına / yapacağı yerde arkadaşlarıyla buluşuyor.

(He is meeting with his friends instead of doing his homework.)

⇒Biz ödevlerimizi yapacağımıza / yapacağımız yerde arkadaşlarımızla buluşuyoruz.

(We meet with our friends instead of doing our homework.)

⇒Siz ödevlerinizi yapacağınıza / yapacağınız yerde arkadaşlarınızla buluşuyorsunuz.

(You meet with your friends instead of doing your homework.)

⇒Onlar ödevlerini yapacağına/yapacaklarına / yapacağı yerde/yapacakları yerde arkadaşlarıyla buluşuyorlar.

(They meet with their friends instead of doing/doing their homework.)
