The two suffixes are used in the same sense. So you can use the two interchangeably. It is used with verbs. It is very similar to the structure “-mak için” that you learned in A2 level. These suffixes are used in the sense of “cause and effect” between two sentences. You can combine two sentences into one sentence using this suffix. The first sentence is “cause”. The second sentence is the “effect/result”.
1. sentence: Hastalandım. I was sick. (The reason sentence. It’s reporting “cause”)
2. sentence: Okula gitmedim. I didn’t go to school. (The effect sentence. It’s reporting the “result”)
⇒Hastalandığım için okula gitmedim. (I didn’t go to school because I was sick.)
DİKKAT! The suffixes “-dığı için / -dığından” are used with verbs that indicate the past tense, present perfect tense, and present continuous tense.
⇒İşe geç kaldığım için patron bana kızdı.
(The boss got mad at me because i was late for work..)
⇒Onu gördüğüm için çok mutluyum.
(I am very happy because i saw/see him/her.)
DİKKAT: We use the verb “olmak” (to be) when using this suffix at the end of nouns and adjectives.
1. sentence: Hastaydım. I was sick. (hasta=sick That’s a adjective)
2. sentence: Okula gitmedim. I didn’t go to school.
⇒Hasta olduğum için okula gitmedim. (I didn’t go to school because I was sick.)
The suffixes change according to vowel harmony ⇓
If the last vowel of the verb is “a or ı” the suffix is: “dığı için/dığından” (kaldığı için/kaldığından)
If the last vowel of the verb is “o, or u” the suffix is: “duğu için/duğundan” (okuduğu için/okuduğundan)
If the last vowel of the verb is “e, or i” the suffix is: “diği için/diğinden” (geldiği için/geldiğinden)
If the last vowel of the verb is “ö, or ü” the suffix is: “düğü için/düğünden” (güldüğü için/güldüğünden)
The first letter of -dığı için / -dığından change according to consonant harmony ⇓
If the last letter of the verb is “f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h or p” the first letter of the suffix is: “t” (koştuğu için/koştuğundan)
If the last letter of the verb is NOT “f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h or p” the first letter of the suffix is: “d” (olduğu için/olduğundan)
These suffixes can change according to possesive suffixes ⇓
⇒Ben ödevlerimi yaptığım için / yaptığımdan bugün arkadaşlarımla buluşabilirim.
(I can meet my friends today because I did my homework.)
⇒Sen ödevlerini yaptığın için / yaptığından bugün arkadaşlarınla buluşabilirsin.
(You can meet your friends because you did your homework.)
⇒O ödevlerini yaptığı için / yapatığından bugün arkadaşlarıyla buluşabilir.
(S/he can meet his/her friends because s/he did her/his homework.)
⇒Biz ödevlerimizi yaptığımız için / yaptığımızdan bugün arkadaşlarımızla buluşabiliriz.
(We can meet our friends because we did our homework.)
⇒Siz ödevlerinizi yaptığınız için / yaptığınızdan bugün arkadaşlarınızla buluşabilirsiniz.
(You can meet your friends because you did your homework.)
⇒Onlar ödevlerini yaptığı/yaptıkları için / yaptığından/yaptıklarından bugün arkadaşlarıyla buluşabilirler.
(They can meet their friends because they did their homework.)
Differences Between acağı için/acağından ve -dığı için/dığından?
dığı için/dığından: It is used with past tense, present perfect tense, and present continuous tense.
acağı için/acağından: It is used with future and past future sentences.
Difference Between mak için and dığı için/dığından?
-dığı için/-dığından: It means “past, present continuous or present perfect tense”. It is used with a possessive suffix. It is used in cause or purpose sentences.
-mak için: There is no time meaning in this suffix. It is for more general uses. It is generally used in sentences about request. There is a request here.
⇒Türkçe öğrendiğim için sertifika aldım.
(I got a certificate for learning Turkish.)
I learned the language (öğrendim). It happened in the past we understand that from the sentence.
⇒Türkçe öğrenmek için kursa gidiyorum.
(I’m going to a course to learn Turkish.)
I want to learn the language. That is my request, my purpose to go to course.
