Indirect Sentence in Turkish (For Imperative Sentence / Emir Cümlesi için)

In this lesson, you can learn how to turn direct sentence into indirect sentence in Turkish. Attention! Indirect sentences change according to different tenses. In this lesson, you will learn the structure of the indirect imperative sentence in Turkish. in other words Türkçede dolaylı emir cümlesi. But first of all, what are direct and indirect sentences? Let’s remember this.

Dolaysız Cümle (Direct Sentence): It is the giving of a word as it is said, without any change. A person’s views and opinions on any subject are given without any changes. This sentence is usually written in quotation marks. We use the verb “dedi” instead of “said” at the end of a direct sentence.

⇒Selma, bana “Haftaya İstanbul’a gel dedi.

(Selma said to me, “Come to Istanbul next week”.)

Dolaylı Cümle: (Indirect Sentence): This is a sentence with some changes, not the same sentence as said. It is the indirect transfer of a word by the speaker or the writer with a slight modification. We use the verb “söyledi, istedi” instead of “said” at the end of a direct sentence.

⇒Selma, bana haftaya İstanbul’a gelmemi söyledi. / Selma, benden haftaya İstanbul’a gelmemi istedi.

(Selma told / wanted me to go to İstanbul next week.)

 

How To Make Indirect Sentence in Turkish? (For Imperative Sentence / Emir Cümlesi için)

If the quoted word is an imperative sentence, we can say indirectly in 2 different ways. We use the appropriate possessive suffix at the end of the verb to whom the command is said. If you add “söyledi” (said) at the end, you should add the suffix “-e -a” to the person to whom the order is given. indirect sentence in turkish

You can also use “istedi”(wanted) instead of “söyledi”. If you use istedi at the end, you should add the suffix “-den -dan” to the person to whom the order is given. indirect sentence in turkish

Direct Sentence: Annem, bana “Tabağını yıka.” dedi.

Indirect Sentence: 1. Annem, bana tabağımı yıkamamı söyledi.

Indirect Sentence: 2. Annem, benden tabağımı yıkamamı istedi.

 

Direct Sentence: Öğretmen, bana “Cevap ver.” dedi.

Indirect Sentence: 1. Öğretmen, bana cevap vermemi söyledi.

Indirect Sentence: 2. Öğretmen, benden cevap vermemi istedi.

 

Direct Sentence: Ben, sana “Bu eteği giyme.” dedim.

Indirect Sentence: 1. Ben, sana bu eteği giymemeni söyledim.

Indirect Sentence: 2. Ben, senden bu eteği giymemeni istedim.

 

Direct Sentence: (Ben) Sana “Su getir.” dedim.

Indirect Sentence: 1. Sana su getirmeni söyledim.

Indirect Sentence: 2. Senden su getirmeni istedim.

 

Direct Sentence:Patron, işçiye “Dışarı çık!” dedi.

Indirect Sentence: 1. Patron, işçiye dışarı çıkmasını söyledi.

Indirect Sentence: 2. Patron, işçiden dışarı çıkmasını istedi.

 

Direct Sentence: Babam, bize “Geceleyin dışarı çıkmayın.” dedi.

Indirect Sentence: 1. Babam, bize geceleyin dışarı çıkmamamızı söyledi.

Indirect Sentence: 2. Babam, bizden geceleyin dışarı çıkmamamızı istedi.

 

Direct Sentence: Doktor, hemşirelere “Ameliyathaneyi hazırlayın.” dedi.

Indirect Sentence: 1. Doktor, hemşirelere ameliyathaneyi hazırlamalarını söyledi.

Indirect Sentence: 2. Doktor, hemşirelerden ameliyathaneyi hazırlamalarını istedi.
