We continue the series of daily Turkish phrases. All the words in this article are the expressions used when greeting or saying goodbye to someone(good wishes in Turkish language). That is, the words that come out of the mouths of Turkish people every day. so that’ll be helpful!
1. HOŞ GELDİNİZ, HOŞ GELDİN
It means “your coming is nice/ you are welcome“. This is usually the first word said to people who arrived at a place or a house, in order to greet them.
Or, for example, when you reached a different city while travelling, “hoş geldiniz” is written on the signboards to welcome you. If the host says “Hoş geldiniz” to you when you are at the door, they expect the following answer from you: “Hoşbulduk“. You may seem a little rude if you don’t reply “hoşbulduk” in return. This means “we have found you nice“
“Hoşgeldiniz” this is used for a person you are not intimate with and for more than one person.
“Hoşgeldin” this is used for one person, but this person must be someone from your intimate and close enviroment. Otherwise you can use “hoşgeldiniz“.
For example:
An elder whom you respect very much came to your house. you should say “hoşgeldiniz” because he is a respected person.
Or your uncle came to visit you with his family. Since there is more than one person, you should say “hoşgeldiniz” again. But if your cousin your age came to your house to visit you, you can say just “hoşgeldin” to him.
2. GÜLE GÜLE
Your guest sipped his tea. He conversed and now has to return. Your guest has stood up and he is leaving your home. You can say “güle güle” in such cases. I mean to say goodbye to him.
“Güle güle” actually has a very nice meaning when you think about it. You wish them “To go laughing, to be happy, not to be sad“.
3. HOŞÇA KAL
The personn leaving the surroundings, on the other hand, says this word to say goodbye to people who are left behind.
Hoşça: pleasantly,
Kal:stay. Stay pleasantly, stay well.
For example in reply to “güle güle“, Turkish people say “Hoşça kal“
4. ALLAH'A ISMARLADIK, ALLAH'A EMANET OL
Turkish people generally use “ısmarlamak” to mean “to buy food and drink for others at your own expense“. But this is not what that means, this time. Again, instead of say “hoşça kal“, the person who has left can say, “Allaha ısmarladık” which means “I entrust you to god.”
Allah’a emanet ol, which is used in the same sense, is also widely used. It’s a word you might hear often.
5. İYİ YOLCULUKLAR, YOLUN AÇIK OLSUN
İYİ YOLCULUKLAR:
If the person leaving you is going to have a long journey, the expression “iyi yolculuklar” is used to mean “I wish you a good trip“. You can use the phrase “İyi yolculuklar” anywhere, in both formal and informal settings.
YOLUN AÇIK OLSUN:
It is a word that is used frequently in the same context. That is, it is said to the person who is going to travel. It is used in the sense of “I wish you not to encounter, an obstacle or an accident on your way“. It is used very often and has sincerity.
